What Happens If You Skip It
The consequences of operating without a required license.
Fines
Most jurisdictions can fine a business that operates without a required license. Some statutes treat each day as a separate violation. This site does not quote fine amounts — read the statute or the agency’s enforcement page for the jurisdiction you are in.
Forced shutdown
Agencies can issue a cease-and-desist that stops the activity until the license is in place. State financial regulators actively look for unlicensed collectors, lenders, money transmitters, and mortgage companies.
Contract problems
Contracts signed while unlicensed may be unenforceable. A contractor without a required license may not be able to collect in court. The other party can raise the missing license as a defense.
Personal liability
Operating without a required license can put personal assets at risk if something goes wrong. That is a legal question for counsel, not a filing-path question.
Find the required desk
Most licensing gaps are fixable once you know which agency takes the application. Use the directory or the roadmap wizard. If you want the filing prepared and submitted, Cornerstone Licensing does that work.
